Wal-Mart Employee Trampled to Death

The throng of Wal-Mart shoppers had been building all night, filling sidewalks and stretching across a vast parking lot at the Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream, N.Y. At 3:30 a.m., the Nassau County police had to be called in for crowd contro...By 4:55, with no police officers in sight, the crowd of more than 2,000 had become a rabble, and could be held back no longer. Fists banged and shoulders pressed on the sliding-glass double doors, which bowed in with the weight of the assault. Six to 10 workers inside tried to push back, but it was hopeless. Suddenly, witnesses and the police said, the doors shattered, and the shrieking mob surged through in a blind rush for holiday bargains. One worker, Jdimytai Damour, 34, was thrown back onto the black linoleum tiles and trampled in the stampede that streamed over and around him. Others who had stood alongside Mr. Damour trying to hold the doors were also hurled back and run over, witnesses said...Some workers who saw what was happening fought their way through the surge to get to Mr. Damour, but he had been fatally injured, the police said...Emergency workers tried to revive Mr. Damour, a temporary worker hired for the holiday season, at the scene, but he was pronounced dead an hour later at Franklin Hospital Medical Center in Valley Stream....Four other people, including a 28-year-old woman who was described as eight months pregnant, were treated at the hospital for minor injuries...

Happy Thanksgiving!

Today is Thanksgiving! I thought I'd take a few moments to list some things I'm thankful for.

• I'm thankful that I have a loving, supportive family.
• I'm thankful that my sister and I have been getting along quite well for the last few years, and I'm no longer afraid she'll kill me in my sleep ;-)
• I'm thankful that I have the opportunity to continue going to school and the ability to afford it.
• I'm thankful that I have a stable (though crappy) job that allows me to pay for school and fun things, too.
• I'm thankful for my wonderful boyfriend :)
• I'm thankful that my close family members have had few health problems as of late.
  
• I'm thankful that I have 5 more-or-less healthy pets (when I chose to forget Halo's obesity)
• I'm thankful that I was able to keep my adorable kitten Alice that we found this year :)
• I'm thankful that I haven't moved in almost a year! (in the past two years I've lived in four different houses!)
• I'm thankful that I have the comfort of leisure time, with which I can watch TV, read, and hang around.
• I'm thankful that I'm doing quite well in school this year :)
• I'm thankful for the month plus that I get off for winter break!!
• I'm thankful for the many creative and talented authors who have written the many books I've indulged in this past year
• I'm thankful that it's almost Christmas/Christmas cookie time!
• I'm thankful that I live quite close to the cupcake store! ;-P
• I'm thankful for my friends who make life more exciting and much more fun.
• I'm thankful for who ever invented tofurkey!
• I'm thankful that I have food to eat and the luxury to chose what food it is that I eat.

There are a trillion plus things to be thankful for, but I think this hits the most important ones.

Twilight!

I went to the Twilight midnight premiere thing last night. Quite fun. My friends and I all dressed up as traditional vampires for the hell of it, and I FINALLY had an excuse to wear my corset I bought at the Renaissance Festival last summer. The movie was soooo much better than I thought it was going to be : ) I was very happy with the casting. Though all the girls screaming "Team Edward!" and "Team Jacob!" every five minutes got old fast, I had a pretty good time. I recommend that, if you haven't seen it yet, you definitely do.

I love cookies.

Mmmmmm!

It's almost Thanksgiving! You know what that means? In just one week, it will be okay---normal, even---to start making Christmas cookies!
This morning, my little sister and I got ahead of ourselves and made some chocolate white chocolate chip cookies (recipe here), and they were pretty much delicious.

Though they were good, they weren't nearly as amazing as the gigantic variety of frosted, jelly filled, sprinkled, gum-dropped, cinnamon swirled, ginger breaded, and cherry topped cookies I'll get to help make (and then consume!) pretty darn soon. Horray!

I don't have a very good background on this... but from what I saw in the few seconds I looked up from my geology text book this just seems wrong. And I don't think they're all that cute, either. You could learn to love them, I'm sure, but purposely breeding cats with such a disadvantage just seems cruel.
